Brian Earl Peter McCarthy

It is with a deep sense of loss that the family of Brian Earl Peter McCarthy shares the news of his passing at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax at the age of 77.
Brian was born in Halifax on October 19, 1948, to the late Patrick and Margaret (Spragg) McCarthy. He was predeceased by his older brother, Michael McCarthy.
Brian dedicated 28 years of his professional life to the Halifax Fire Service, retiring as District Chief in 2003. His commitment to serving others extended beyond his career. Brian had an extraordinary capacity for caring, and he gave generously of his time, energy, and compassion whenever someone needed help. He was instrumental in establishing the Nova Scotia Firefighters Burn Treatment Society, an organization that continues to provide vital support to the IWK and QEII burn treatment centres, as well as the regional skin tissue bank.
Following his volunteer service during the Swissair disaster relief effort in 1998, Brian continued his dedication to public service in a civilian role with the RCMP.
Brian’s dedication to people was at the heart of who he was. He cared deeply and sincerely, and his kindness was never reserved for a select few. Whether through his work, his volunteer efforts, or simply being there for a friend, neighbour, colleague, or family member, Brian had a remarkable way of making people feel seen, valued, and cared for. He was the person who would make the time, lend a hand, offer encouragement, or quietly step forward when someone was in need.
Family and friends will remember Brian for his friendly and outgoing personality, his generous and compassionate heart, his unwavering dedication to others, and the genuine interest he took in everyone he met. His impact was felt not only through the many lives he touched in his professional and volunteer work, but also through the countless small acts of kindness that defined him.
Brian is survived by his cherished partner, Maria Lang; his children, Tim (Crystal) McCarthy of Halifax and Karrie (Fintan) O’Shea of Dartmouth; their mother, Shirley Chiasson; and his three wonderful grandchildren, Ryan McCarthy, and Declan and Connall O’Shea.
In keeping with Brian’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
For those wishing to honour Brian’s memory, donations to the Nova Scotia Firefighters Burn Treatment Society or the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada would be appreciated. Equally meaningful would be to carry forward Brian’s example by offering a kind word, lending a helping hand, or performing another simple act of caring for someone in need.
Brian spent his life giving of himself to others. His legacy will live on in the people he helped, the lives he touched, and the many acts of kindness he inspired. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Brian and I met at The Berkeley on Pepperell Street. Brian had gone to high school with my husband and, when Michael died, Brian was the first person at my door. Whether it was dragging me out for breakfast or a mid-afternoon coffee to help me in those terrible early days, I always knew Brian was keeping a supportive eye. I could never properly express to him how much his kindness meant to me…..hopefully he knew. Brian, say hi to Mikey for me.

My deepest condolences to Brian’s family. Brian and I worked together for many years at the Fire Department, and I learned a lot from him.
Many lessons involved some form of discipline or ribbing (for me) and his impish grin, but usually ended with a laugh. Learn the hard way he’d say.
I am honoured to have considered him a friend. He will be missed. RIP brother.
