Dr. Eric Leslie Smith

With profound sadness, the family of Eric Leslie Smith, 80, of Halifax, announces his death on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at Moody Hall, Halifax.
Born in Montreal, Eric was the son of the late Kenneth and Marjorie (Irving) Smith.
Eric dedicated his career to his patients as a highly respected orthodontist, widely known as ” The Best.” He was a charming, outgoing man with a wonderful sense of humour, always quick to share a laugh and genuinely connect with those around him.
A passionate and accomplished sailor, Eric excelled as an ocean racer and was a past Vice Commodore of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. He shared his deep love for the sea with his family, spending countless summers sailing the waters of the South Shore. His artistic talents spanned several instruments; he was a gifted musician who played guitar, piano, bass, and the pipe organ, and he sang in numerous choirs and choruses. He shared a lifelong appreciation for classical music with his wife, Kathleen. Friends will also fondly remember his enthusiasm for classic cars, especially his cherished Ferraris and Jaguars. Eric’s legacy is defined by his warmth and unwavering devotion to his family and friends.
He is lovingly survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Kathy; his son, Ian (Ashley) Smith of Lower Sackville; his daughter, Jennifer (Timothy Bickmore) Smith of Beverly, MA; and his grandchildren, Kate, Olivia, Nick, Skyler, Charlotte, as well as great-grandson, Elijah. He also leaves his sisters, Karen Allen of Connecticut, Victoria (John) Hubbell of Coburg, ON, and Deirdre (John) Cadman of Beamsville, ON, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Eric was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Kendra Smith.
In honour of Eric’s wishes, there will be a Celebration of his life on Saturday, January 24, 2026 from 2-5 p.m. at The Saraguay House, 2310 Purcell’s Cove Road, Halifax. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Personal Care Cremations & Memorial Services.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Operation Smile Canada or a charity of your choice, in tribute to Eric’s life.

Dear Mrs. Smith and family,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Eric’s passing. I’m so sorry I cannot be there to celebrate his life in person, but please know my thoughts are very much with you.
From my earliest days as his student, Eric made a lasting impression on me. He played an important role in my journey to becoming an orthodontist. Over time, that student–mentor relationship grew into a valued friendship, and I will always be grateful for.
He often spoke with such pride and love about his wife and grandchildren, and it was clear how deeply he cherished his family. We also shared a passion for our profession and for Ferraris, and those conversations brought so much joy — memories I will always treasure.
Eric will be deeply missed and will forever hold a special place in my heart.
