In loving memory of
Heather Louise Douglas
The family have chosen this music to commemorate their loved one.
Heather Louise Douglas, 78, of Milton, Nova Scotia, passed away at home on August 3, 2026, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Heather was born and raised in Milton and attended Acadia University. After graduating, she went on to work as an analyst in Halifax, Montreal and Vancouver, and spent much of her life in Toronto.
Being Heather’s family meant blurred, holiday-frenzied trips picking her up at the airport, her piling into the car in the most glamorous coats you’ve ever seen. It meant hours-long conversations as restaurants closed around you. It meant being sent links to craft fairs and radical feminist textile installations. It meant constant updates about the weather, delivered with meteorologist – accurate precision.
Being Heather’s friend meant being friends with someone smart, interesting, and incredibly well-read. Her friend of thirty years, Stephanie Walls, remembers her for her keen interest in absolutely everything. Stephanie recalls Heather as being brave, not just for bravery in the face of death, but also recalls fondly a forsythia plant heist that Heather absolutely insisted on pulling off.
Heather was incredibly thoughtful and funny, as well as deeply stoic and spiritual. She spent a great deal of time pondering the purpose of life and never complained about her illness or how her own time would inevitably be cut short. She was a very discerning reader of many genres, and she loved sharing books and conversations about books with friends and family.
She had a deep-seated sense of design and viewed every occasion as an opportunity for thoughtful perfection, whether that be through work, parties, her garden, extravagant holiday meals, or always, always her clothes.
For someone who knew she had a limited amount of time, she was so willing to live slowly. She relished everyday moments and had a deep need to understand people. Whether it was the people around her or those she would never meet, she wanted to understand it all. Heather lived for human connection and devoted her life to being able to intelligently connect with everyone she encountered. Anyone who knew Heather would tell you that her work as an analyst aligned perfectly with the way she looked at the world; she was constantly collecting data, opinions, and new ways to think. We will miss her for all of it.
She was predeceased by her parents, Marion and Burke, and her older brother Robert.
She leaves behind her sister, Nancy Durnford, her nieces Sally Sotnek, Megan Durnford (Larry Dionne), Kendra Durnford (Mark Snyder), Rosemary MacEachen (Al), and Roberta Douglas (Mark); and her grand nieces and nephews, Ian, Elliott, Timothy, Charlotte, Hannah, Hugh, Matilda, and Cal. Additionally, she leaves behind many, many dear friends.
And of course, one perfectly healthy forsythia.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders, or Hope For Wildlife would be appreciated.

I have so many fond memories of Heather from the time when we met on the gardening committee of our condo Village by the Grange many years ago. She had such a quick and curious mind, with deep convictions and strong opinions. A fashionista with flair, a great movie partner to share art house films with and a great hostess. She carried herself with such grace and dignity through her illness. I am so glad I had a chance to visit her in Nova Scotia and last winter when she came to Toronto. I will miss you Heather.
Gone too soon. You had such a zest for life and the world will never be the same. The restaurants we sampled, the shows we saw, the days at COMSOC that we wished to be over, One of a Kind, the weddings – so many memories. I miss you, my friend. Rest in peace.
What a beautiful tribute to Heather…written with the flair that reflects Heather herself. ❤️ Her lively conversation will certainly be missed at our family dinners. Rosemary, AL and Calum
