Karen Ann Mills
With a deep sense of loss, the family of Karen Ann Mills, 61, of Timberlea, announces her passing on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at the Q.E. II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.
Born in Pictou, Nova Scotia, she was the beloved daughter of the late Donald and Esther Mills.
Karen dedicated thirty years of her life as an administrator in the Continuing Education Department at Dalhousie University. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a quiet and gentle soul who never had a mean word to say about anyone. Karen loved spending time at home, creating beautiful crochet and wool projects that are now treasured keepsakes for her family. An avid reader, she also found great joy in completing puzzles. Above all, Karen was most proud of her family and took immense pride in all their accomplishments throughout the years.
She leaves behind her loving husband, Jim Hubley; her daughters, Lynn Hubley of Lower Sackville, and Lisa Quirk of Red Deer, Alberta. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Cameron Jelinek, Jordan, and Taylor Quirk.
In keeping with Karen’s wishes, there will be no public memorial service. For those who wish to make a donation in her memory, the family would appreciate contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Personal Care Cremations & Memorial Services.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Karen’s passing. I worked with Karen after our two units became the College of Continuing and we all moved into our new offices together. She was always a calming force and had a wicked sense of humour. We shared many mornings sitting at a table at the top of the stairs outside our offices waiting for seminar participants to arrive, sharing stories and lots of laughs. I always knew if I had a question, Karen would have the answer. She was a very special person and I know will be greatly missed by all who knew her. My deepest condolences to Jim and family.
I was so shocked to hear of Karen’s passing just now. I did not know she was ill. I worked with her for a number of years in what was then referred to as the College of Continuing Education at Dalhousie University. Whenever I think of Karen I always remember her as a steady presence who seemed completely unflappable no matter what amount of chaos was going on in the Office. If Karen couldn’t solve it then it couldn’t be solved and I always remember how she kept things ticking along with the College’s Finances even during the dreaded year end. I’m sure it was very stressful for her but you would have never known it as it passed with what seemed like no incident the year she looked after it. I also remember how she worked tirelessly to get everyone up to speed on our then new system called Destiny. She had a wicked sense of humour that could disarm you as you never knew if she was teasing or not. When she retired her presence was definitely missed. I’m glad she got to enjoy some of her retirement life before this illness. I know she enjoyed spending time with her family and often spoke of them with great fondness. My condolences to her family and friends at this difficult time. May your memories of her keep her close as you navigate this new normal.

It’s not an easy job to be a step parent. There’s hate disrespect finally understanding and love. Karen, thank you so very much for being the stepmom that you were for my children. I so very much appreciate it. We’ve always been on good terms. we’ve always respected each other. And that’s all anybody can ask for. I feel so sorry for my girls and also for my ex-husband, Jim, it’s not easy to lose somebody you love.
