Kevin Wayne Sawler

It is with deep sadness that the family of Kevin Wayne Sawler, 67, of Western Shore, announces his passing on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the Q.E. II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. Born in Lunenburg, he was a son of the late Robert and Marie Sawler.
Kevin began his working life alongside his father, learning the traditional skills of a cooper,
going lobster fishing, and dipping for gaspereau. He later became a skilled heavy equipment
operator, working for Don Fickes for many years. As he drove around the South Shore of Nova
Scotia, he would often proudly point out the many stone retaining walls he had built over his
career.
A quiet man who lived life on his own terms, Kevin’s family was always his greatest priority. He
adored his granddaughter, Lily, taking her everywhere with him and spending countless hours
fishing, swimming at the lake and spending time at camp. Kevin also found great peace at his
camp in Martins River, a place he visited almost daily. Though he enjoyed hunting and fishing,
he grew fond of the deer that visited the camp, turning them into "pets" that were strictly off-limits to hunters. Up until recently, he continued to smoke his own fish—which was always in high demand—and his presence as the master turkey and ham carver will be deeply missed at family holiday gatherings.
Kevin leaves behind his loving wife, Cindy (together for 39 years); his proud daughter, Jessie
(Justin Goodyear) of Western Shore; and his very proud granddaughter, Lily Cyr. He is also
survived by his sisters, Heather (Norman) Wheeler, Glyda (Lawrence) Sawler, and Loralee
(Wayne) Rafuse; his brothers, Gary (Peggy), Howard, and Kimber (Bonnie), all of Western
Shore, and Roderick of Gold River; as well as several nieces and nephews. He is also remembered by his mother-in-law, Joan Mosher, previously of Western Shore, and in-laws, Sandra (Jean Claude) Le Lons and Crystal (Andrew) Swinimer, both from Cornwall.
In keeping with Kevin’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no public memorial
service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Personal Care Cremations & Memorial Services.
For those who wish, donations in Kevin’s memory to the Guillain-Barré Foundation (GBS) or
Hope for Wildlife would be greatly appreciated by the family.

So very sad to hear of Kevin’s passing. I had a lot of fun growing up with my cousins on the shore. Rest in peace sweet cousin. Condolences to family.

I am Kevin’s cousin, and have not seen him since he was a child. Obituaries are a summary of a person’s life, and from reading Kevin’s, it appears that he lived his life well. I am so sorry for your very great loss, and send condolences.
Sorry to hear of Kevin’s passing. He was a good friend to me over all the years he worked with my brother. He certainly knew a lot.
One of the funniest things I remember about Kevin was that I wanted to extend my son’s boat trailer so we wouldn’t have so much trouble launching and hauling his boat. I asked Kenvin if he could build it for me. I tried to explain what I wanted, and he just laughed with that distinct laugh of his and told me I had no idea what I was talking about. I thought that was funny, and asked him to build something, which he did. It worked great.
Kevin also helped me obtain my Class 3 commercial truck driver’s license about 3 months ago.
He certainly will be missed.

I was so very sorry to hear of Kevin’s passing and your deep loss.
I have such wonderful memories of the years Kevin worked with Don on the farm. Over the years Don and Kevin became and remained trusted friends. A fact that Don deeply valued. My daughters always said Kevin could “ figure out and build anything”which was evident in the many school projects he “supervised”, and remember his patience and dry humor as they followed him around the farm as kids.
We were a family blessed by his friendship.

So sorry to hear of Kevin’s passing. I never saw him a lot but will miss our chats when I passed by his place. He smoked the best fish and always saw that mom got a feed when she called him and if they turned out too dry he knew Gail liked them that way. He just helped me in the new year with the art of muzzle loading. We had a great day at the range and I definitely learned a lot. He will definitely be missed.
