Mary Adelaide Louise Saunders

It is with a deep sense of loss that the family of Mary Adelaide Louise Saunders, 97, of Mahone Bay, share the news of her passing on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the Mahone Nursing Home, Mahone Bay.
Born in Chester, Mary was a daughter of the late Clyde and Adelaide (Whitford) Hirtle.
Mary began her working life with the Chester Telephone Office as an operator until 1955, when she became a first-time mother. She then committed herself to cleaning both her home and children, baking, shopping, and time spent gardening. She was a gardener in the extreme, weeding until dark, while her eyes adjusted to the waning light. Mary was also a great lover of animals, both large and small and was always a fierce advocate on their behalf.
Mary is survived by her sons, Joseph, and John Saunders, both of Toronto; her daughter, Susan Saunders of Lunenburg; grandchildren, Caitlin, Adrian, Nicole, Sean and great- grandchildren, Lily, Jackson, Sophia, Oliver, Elliot, Samantha, Ender, and Io.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Joe.
In keeping with Mary’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there is to be no public memorial service. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Personal Care Cremations.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Chester United Baptist Church, The Strays and Ferals of western Shre or the Shaid Tree Animal Shelter in Mary’s memory would be appreciated by the family.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff at Mahone Nursing Home for the excellent care and compassion in the extreme given to her daily over the last two years. You will never know how much ease of mind you created for her loved ones!

My heart broke as I read of Mary’s passing. Mary was quite a lovely Lady. What wonderful fitting song for Mary. Her gardens were as beautiful as in Heaven. Mary achieved Her golden Wings on Her 97th Birthday. What a fine celebration it must have been in Heaven to welcome Her home. May God help you all during this time.
