With love and gratitude for his life, the family of Michael Victor Gauthier announces his passing on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at QEII Halifax Infirmary in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Mike will be dearly missed by his children, Hélène (James Hutt) Gauthier of Minneapolis, MN, and Michael (Vicki) Gauthier, of Hammonds Plains, NS; his much-loved grandchildren, Rachel (Dan Bradford) Hutt, Stuart Hutt, William Hutt, Joshua Gauthier, and Michaela Gauthier. He is also survived by his brothers, Thomas “Bub” (Nikki) of Trenton, ON, and Bernard (Judy) of London, ON; his sister Sheila (Eldon) Burchart of Trenton, ON; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was predeceased by his dear wife Anne, his parents and by two sisters in infancy.
Mike was born on July 3rd, 1940, in South Porcupine (Timmins) Ontario. He was the first child of Thomas and Mary (Griffin) Gauthier.
A proud son of Trenton, Ontario, Mike cherished his childhood spent on the shores of the Bay of Quinte, where summer days were spent at the beach, swimming, and eating his mother’s home-grown tomatoes and potato salad. His lifelong love of the water began in those years, when he learned to swim at the Trenton #1 Dam while retrieving his father’s lost fishing lures.
After high school, Mike briefly worked in grocery and construction before realizing his true calling: service with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He traveled west to Regina for basic training, where he forged friendships that lasted a lifetime. During a wedding where he served as a groomsman, Mike met Anne, the love of his life. They shared 34 happy years together until her passing, raising a family and building a life rooted in love, laughter, and community.
Mike’s 38-year RCMP career spanned postings across Nova Scotia, where he served on Highway Patrol, in local detachments, in security systems, and on the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team for Atlantic Canada. Known for his dedication and calm under pressure, he relished the variety of the work and the camaraderie of his colleagues. He concluded his career at the Canadian Police College in Ottawa, where he taught explosive disposal to officers from across Canada and around the world. Mike often reminded his children and grandchildren: “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
In retirement, Mike embraced travel, exploring countries he had once only read about as a boy — Australia, New Zealand, China, Greece, Egypt, Iceland, South Africa, Brazil, and beyond. He loved meeting people, collecting stories, and sharing photos with his family back home. Closer to home, he enjoyed time with his Ottawa coffee friends, and even more so, time with his grandchildren and grand dogs — who will long remember his stories, humor, and the deep love he poured into every visit.
A Celebrtion of Life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026 2026 at Cornerstone Wesleyan Church, Hammonds Plains from 1-3 p.m., with a private family interment at a later date in Holy Name Cemetery in Westville, Nova Scotia. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Personal Care Cremations.
The family would like to thank Parkland Clayton Park and the QE II for their contribution to his care and comfort. And recognize his close friend and former coworker, Bob Ringer, for his kindness and support to Mike during his time in Halifax.
The family welcomes donations in Mike’s memory to The Ottawa Mission or your charity of choice as a lasting tribute to his generous spirit.
