Robert “Bob” Hickey

​With a great sense of loss the family of Robert Joseph Hickey, 80, of Bedford, share the news of his passing on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Halifax. Born in Summerside, PEI, he was a son of the late Thomas Earle and Elizabeth Margaret (McCardle) Hickey.

Bob leaves behind his first wife, Janet (Ozon); his second wife, Laura (Mackenzie); his sons Ryan of Kitchener, ON, Liam (Andrea Keough) of Fredericton, Evan (Andrea) of Bedford; his step-sons Jason (Shawna) VanderToorn of Fredericton, Darrin (Allie) VanderToorn of South Carolina; proud grandfather to Katie, Merrin, Clara, June, Lincoln, Kaela, Cameron, Mackenzie, Ethan, Delaney, Kyle, and Mason; his siblings James (Arlita), Ottawa, Ron (Gloria), Summerside, Helen (Donnie) MacKinnon, Grand River, PEI, Earle, Dartmouth; as well as several nieces and nephews.

After graduating from Summerside High, Bob completed his B.Sc. from Saint Dunstan’s University, obtained his MBA from Dalhousie and then earned the prestigious Chartered Accountant designation.

He will be remembered as a deeply devoted father and “Grampie” who never missed a chance to show how much he cared by cheering on the sidelines or preparing a meal like his famous seafood chowder or barbecued steak for those he loved. Behind every family gathering, competitive game, leisurely walk with a brother, you could find him with a camera in hand, capturing moments the rest of us were too busy living to notice. His gentle quiet love and dry sense of humour had a way of making everyone feel important and valued, and the advice and wisdom he shared will carry on.

Bob had a very successful career in Finance, holding high level positions at many major Maritime companies, ending his working years in Portland, Oregon as a Senior VP with Greenbrier until he retired in 2016 at age 70 and moved back to Bedford.  He cared deeply about his work, and for his employees and the communities he worked in, leaving lasting impact. He was a calm, logical, subtle and effective leader, with integrity and intelligence.

In keeping with Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private graveside service will take place followed by an opportunity for Family and friends to drop by and share a laugh, a story, a special memory, or a handshake and hug will occur on July 30, 2026 at the Summerside Shipyard in PEI, from 3:00 -6:00 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to Personal Care Cremations and Memorial Services.

In lieu of flowers, donations made to Feed Nova Scotia (https://feednovascotia.ca/) or charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

The family will never forget the care and support Bob received from the V3 East team at the Geriatric Restorative Care Unit in Halifax. A huge thank you to everyone!

In keeping with Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private graveside service will take place followed by an opportunity for Family and friends to drop by and share a laugh, a story, a special memory, or a handshake and hug will occur on July 30, 2026 at the Summerside Shipyard in PEI, from 3:00 -6:00 p.m.
