With a deep sense of loss, the family of Roberta Lee Uhlman, 69, of Pleasant River, announce her passing on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Queen’s General Hospital, Liverpool.

Born in Caledonia, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Nina (Weare) Merry.

Mom grew up in Maitland Bridge. She met Dad in the ’70s and they married in ’79. They lived in the Caledonia area for many years & then bought a home in Pleasant River. Mom enjoyed crosswords and the Friday lexicon puzzles in the Chronicle Herald and would always call her friend Gloria to check her answers.

She very much enjoyed thrift shopping, especially at the Daisy in Bridgewater- the friendly staff always loved seeing Mom come in. She had a sweet tooth for baked goods, particularly from Bob and the Boys Market.

Dad’s Uncle, Leonard Smith, lived with us for many years til his passing, Mom cared for him and enjoyed his company, especially when my sister and I moved out of the nest.

Mom loved King Cole Tea and had a collection of the thimbles from when they use to come in the boxes. Mom loved collecting multiples of things; she would usually buy a shirt in every color. She loved Avon, always wearing the vanilla musk perfume and powder. She loved calendars, always picking one up from every store that were giving them out. We always knew what time it was at home, she loved clocks, especially the ones with the birds chirping every hour. Always doing laundry and hanging it out on the line…she enjoyed the simple things at home. Mom never carried a driver’s licence, so it was exciting for her when my sister and I got ours and were able to take her to town more often, as Dad worked a lot.

Those who knew Mom, know how much she loved the telephone. Often calling to find out what her friends and family were having for supper and what they were up to that day. She loved baking pies and homemade bread…she made the best fried dough Dads favorite! Having lived across the road from the community grocery store for years, she made a few trips across the road to get 50lb bag of potatoes, she made a lot of potato hash…it was a staple in our house.

Mom loved dogs, especially her 19 year old mixed breed-Misty. Mom carried her in her heart for years after she passed. Mom very much enjoyed when her friend Joan came home to visit next door and they would take Misty for walks…it was a yearly tradition. A couple years ago, Mom and Dad took in some stray kittens. She became very attached to them, one in particular that she called “Tigey”.

Mom loved Christmas, smothering the tree with garland and icicles was her forte and filling the ceiling with decorations. She was a huge fan of the Sears Christmas Wishbook. Christmas shopping at Kmart, Zellers and The Met for Mom was a big deal. & she couldn’t wait to order from the Tupperware catalogue.

Growing up, Mom enjoyed taking my sister and I with her to the Merium Hunts Park in Caledonia to listen to the music on Friday nights …she enjoyed listening to country music. Sundays was family time, as Dad wasn’t working and we’d usually venture to Lequile for an ice-cream, Mom loved Grapenut or orange pineapple- usually was a tub or two in the freezer at home at all times.

The walls and stands at home filled with pictures of family. She anxiously awaited family photos and school pictures every year, she proudly displayed them in every room. Mom liked hand me downs, whether from penny auctions, yard sales… or clothes that friends would give her.

Mom loved being a Mom and even more, a grandmother to Wyatt. He brought so much joy to her life and called everyday to ask how he was. She looked forward to the weekends when she could see him and when he’d come for a sleepover. She always called him “Grammies Boy”.

Sometimes life was hard, but she and Dad always stuck together and got through it. Dad was her everything. Dad visited her every day for hours when she was in the hospital and while she was in the nursing home the last couple months…they were inseparable. Dad wants to send a big thank you out to the wonderful staff at North Queens Nursing Home for their compassionate care they gave Mom during her short stay with them. Especially Janet Louise Fancy and Donna Corkum – thank you will never be enough. You truly made Mom’s hardest days easier…we will be forever grateful.

Roberta is survived by her loving husband, Edward of 46 years; daughters, Michelle Uhlman, Springfield, Melanie (Shaun) Kariler, Lower Rosebay; Grandson Wyatt, brothers, Garnet (Judy) Merry, Maitland Bridge, Stanley Merry, Caledonia, Gary (Gertrude) Merry, Bridgewater; sisters, Judy (Chester) Orde, South Milford, Heather Hearn, Westfield, Annette Baker, Bridgetown, Margaret (Laurie) Ford, Maitland Bridge, Janet Smith, Wileville, Barbara Selig, East Clifford; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brother, Wade (Theresa) Merry; brothers -in-law, Jimmy Baker, Frank Smith, Charles Hearn and Kendall Selig.

In keeping with Roberta’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there is to be no public memorial service. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Personal Care Cremations. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Kidney Foundation, Diabetes Association or the SHAID Tree Animal Shelter would be appreciated by the Family.
